Why a Lewes Library of Things?

There are several reasons why a Lewes Library of Things came about. Many people like to undertake projects, host events or go away but don’t have the necessary equipment. In some cases, you may buy an item use it once and then forget about it. Or you might not be able to buy something because it’s unaffordable and so you have to give up on what you wanted to do. Sometimes you may be able to borrow something from a friend or neighbour and that’s great.

You may be one of those who buy something and then rarely use it again if at all. So you have paid out perhaps a large sum of money, which with a Library of Things would be unnecessary, and you have also bought something that will eventually become waste and will have produced unnecessary carbon emissions through it’s manufacture. We have seen this summer, 2023, what carbon dioxide emissions are doing to the weather and the devastating heatwaves and floods around the globe. If we can cut done on this consumption and waste it’s good for an individual’s own pocket and good for the environment. Win win!

Would you like to ‘Take the Jump’ to consume less? Have a look here to see what this involves.

 About Tony Rowell - Founder

"I am enthusiastic about setting up projects that enable the less well off to access stuff and services which may be inaccessible. I set up Lewes Repair Café in 2019 and the Library of Things provides a similar sort of service centred around reducing waste and carbon emissions.

I also want to change people’s way of consuming so that borrowing becomes the usual way of consuming rather than buying. We can have a different type of economic model other than capitalism which is so destructive. This will help reduce waste and at the same time carbon emissions which is absolutely crucial if a climate catastrophe is to be averted”
